Sir Elton John’s Select Security Stadium gig has been hailed as a success, with people taking to social media to praise the event, organised by Halton Borough Council,  Marshall Arts Ltd and Orchard Entertainment

More than 14,000 packed the venue to hear the legendary singer/songwriter and his band belt out hit after hit including The Bitch Is Back, Daniel, Rocket Man, Your Song, and Candle In The Wind.

There were touching tributes to George Michael and the victims of recent incidents in Manchester and London, during the two hour ten minute set.

Halton Borough Council Executive Board Member for the Stadium, Cllr Phil Harris, said: “It was a great day and the first of many to come in future years.

“All credit to the Council teams and blue light services who delivered a safe enjoyable day for thousands of visitors to Widnes. We are busy planning the next one already.”

People held garden parties at homes near the event and the good weather only helped the festival atmosphere, as temperatures hit 27c.

Social media comments included : “Thank you so much to everyone involved in the #EltoninWidnes concert. It was Fantastic. First of many I hope 😉

“Brilliant and very well run event tonight couldn’t fault the staff did us proud well done all of you 👏here’s to the next concert .”

and: “Well done on organising this fantastic event! A great positive for the town 👏👏👏”

A lot of people wore big glasses and fancy dress and many posted videos and pictures on Twitter and Facebook.

The superstar came to Widnes as part of his worldwide Wonderful Crazy Night Tour.

Taking to the stage, Elton performed songs from his latest studio album ‘Wonderful Crazy Night’, as well as his most-loved hits from his stellar career.

Halton Borough Council presented Elton with Widnes Rugby League tops to mark the occasion.
