Halton Borough Council has secured funding from the Arts Council to run a series of free creative writing workshops for adults at its libraries starting this month (January)
Organisers say this this is an exciting opportunity for adults across Halton to develop their literacy and gain creative writing expertise – all free of charge.
Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board Member for Libraries, Cllr Phil Harris, said: “It will enhance informal learning opportunities already available free within our library service.
“The Write Time Write Place project is a series of eights-week adult creative writing courses taking place in libraries across Halton from January to March 2018.
“The one-and-a-half hour sessions will take place during the daytime and will focus on such areas as inspiration, characterisation, settings and plotting stories, revising and editing.”
Following on from the workshops, the participants will be encouraged to finish their stories and submit them for a Write Time Write Place anthology, which will be professionally published and each course member given a copy.
Halton Libraries will also keep copies for their lending section. Participants will also be given the opportunity to read extracts from their stories at a special event at Halton Lea library.
Write Now Write Place is the brainchild of Charlie Lea, a local writer, principal of the literacy company Read Now Write Now and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
He says “We are delighted that Halton Libraries have been successful in obtaining funding from the Arts Council and look forward to running the workshops with adults across the borough to inspire creative writing.
“We aim to help participants learn the skills to write a short story and to thereon write independently. We feel that there is no better sense of achievement for writers than to see their work published into an anthology and to hopefully continue writing themselves.”
The Write Time Write Place project has already taken place in Wirral and Cheshire West and Chester to great acclaim.
