Work on the building of Halton’s new leisure centre is moving along well as anyone passing the Wates Construction site on Moor Lane, Widnes, will see.

Despite recent wet weather, groundworks are progressing well. The trenches for the pools are complete and the permanent duct work for the street lighting was installed along what will eventually be the centre of the car park. Wates are continuing to prepare the west end of the site ready for the site facilities.

The car park to the east of the site is now open to the public and is being well used. You enter the car park via Victoria Road/Witt Road.

The striking, modern building will house swimming pools, a gym, sports hall, and much more.

Expected completion and opening date for the centre is Spring 2025.

Halton Borough Council Leader, Cllr Mike Wharton, recently visited the site along with Deputy Leader and portfolio holder for Major Projects, Cllr Dave Thompson, and Cllr Paul Nolan, portfolio holder for leisure services. They were shown around the site and given a progress report by Wates.

Cllr Wharton said: “It was really interesting to see the work carried out so far and visualise how the centre is going to look. It is also great to hear how the company is creating jobs, apprenticeships and work experience placements for local people, and that they are getting the community involved by working with schools and colleges, for example.”

For the duration of the construction programme, Wates have pledged to fully engage with and support the local community. As such, they have registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, an independent organisation which promotes high standards in the construction industry, monitoring and visiting sites to assess how well the construction company is performing as a Considerate Constructor in terms of community engagement, safety, appearance, workforce and environmental compliance.
