RR Gif- 2024

As we begin another year, we can reflect on the transformative progress achieved through the Reconnecting Runcorn programme. From breaking ground on major projects to revitalising cultural hubs and community spaces, the year has been one of growth, collaboration, and innovation. Here’s a recap of some key milestones:

The Brindley Enhancement

Construction began in August on the ambitious upgrade to the Brindley, a cornerstone of Runcorn’s cultural scene. Despite the ongoing works, the venue continues its full programme of events, ensuring it remains a hub for the community. The project is set to complete by November 2026, with progress documented via a monthly timelapse

Creative and Digital Skills Centre

In September, ground was broken on the exciting new Youthy.com centre, at 57-59 High Street, a collaborative effort led by Power in Partnership. This state-of-the-art youth centre is expected to be completed by September 2025.

Meanwhile, Hazlehurst Studios has flourished during its first full year at 71 High Street, hosting 78 workshops, 12 open days and welcoming over 1,100 visitors through these events.

Plans to restore 63-65 High Street continue, with tweaks to the design ensuring the future training and learning centre stays on track amid economic challenges.

Health and Education Hub

With planning permission secured, 2024 laid the groundwork for this vital new facility, with works expected to start on site in 2025.

Community Peace Garden and Buddhist Temple

A patch of soil transformed into a tranquil corner on Runcorn High Street. Completed in June, the garden is now home to a striking six-metre bronze chedi taking centre stage from North Thailand. Funding has also been secured for the construction of an Ubosot Hall, from the FCC, which is set to begin development in 2025.

Street Art Celebrating Runcorn

Two artists, Aylo Nomad and Liam Bononi, have been commissioned to create murals celebrating Runcorn’s history and culture, telling stories from the Dukesfield area. Their work will be unveiled in Spring 2025, bringing vibrant new life to the viaducts.

Public Realm Improvements

This year the St Paul’s Mews properties on the High Street have been demolished to make way for the future public realm improvements.

New Homes for the Town Centre

Construction began on 66 new apartments on the High Street New Homes in partnership with Halton Housing Trust, with completion expected for Spring 2026. Site investigation work at the Rutland Street site has been completed, setting the stage for future development.

Unlock Runcorn: Canal Experience

Phase one of the canal restoration project kicked off with the Big Dig in August, where the community joined the Unlock Runcorn Restoration Locks Society in an archaeological excavation in the hopes to uncover the ‘bullnose’ of the old canal system walls.

Looking Ahead to 2025

With so many projects already underway, 2025 promises to be another exciting year for Reconnecting Runcorn. From the continued development of community spaces to unveiling new public art, Runcorn’s transformation is well underway, bringing fresh energy and opportunities to the town.
