A year ago, Halton proudly launched the Mockingbird Family Model – a pioneering approach to foster care that builds strong, supportive communities around fostering families. This week, children, families and social care staff came together to highlight the incredible impact this scheme has had at a celebration event.
Halton’s first constellation “The Robins” is led by Donna and Allan Watts, after a year, they reflect on what it’s been like for them as the Hub Home carers “Our first year as a hub home has been amazing. We’ve seen carers grow in confidence and children flourish because they feel part of something bigger. It’s not just about support – it’s about creating a family network where everyone feels valued and understood.”
Mockingbird model focusses on the creation of “constellations” of foster families, led by an experienced hub home carer, the scheme offers practical help, emotional support, and a sense of belonging for everyone involved. Over the past 12 months, this approach has transformed the fostering experience in Halton.
What’s Changed?
- Stronger Support Networks: Foster carers now have a trusted circle to lean on, reducing isolation and improving resilience.
- Better Outcomes for Children: Children benefit from stability and continuity, with familiar faces and safe spaces across the constellation.
- Community Spirit: Events, sleepovers, and shared activities have brought joy and connection, making fostering feel like an extended family.
Why It Matters Fostering can be challenging, but with Mockingbird, carers in Halton know they’re never alone. This model strengthens relationships, prevents placement breakdowns, and ensures children thrive in loving, supportive environments.
As we look ahead, we’re excited to grow the scheme even further, welcoming more carers into this innovative network. Together, we’re building a future where every child feels safe, supported, and part of a family.
