The Council is aware of the concerns of members of the local community regarding the reducing levels of water in the pond at Runcorn Hill Park and wanted to provide assurances that it is working to address this situation.
The pond at Runcorn Hill Park is normally adequately fed by surface water runoff and the field drainage system from the Heath Playing Fields.
However, the extremely dry weather conditions in Spring 2025, which are provisionally the second driest on record for England and the warmest and sunniest spring on record for the UK as a whole, have seen water levels in the pond drop significantly.
The Council is working with our colleagues at United Utilities and the Environment Agency to address the current situation at the earliest opportunity in order to plan for future management of this important feature within the park and to ensure the protection of invertebrate and amphibian wildlife.
At this time the pond is holding water, and we don’t currently anticipate needing to intervene to rescue any fish stock or wildlife.
