Residents in Halton are being asked to provide their views on a new strategy to improve the choice, quality and affordability of the local housing offer.
Consultation on the new Housing Strategy for Halton 2026 – 2031 launches Friday 3rd October and runs for six weeks.
The aim of the draft Housing Strategy is for ‘Homes That Drive Growth, Opportunity, and Fairness for all in Halton’ and seeks to achieve this through four proposed priorities:
- Driving economic growth through housing-led investment
- Creating inclusive housing markets to promote fairness
- Supporting independent living, empowering people, and strengthening communities
- Promoting healthy homes, thriving communities and resilient neighbourhoods.
Launching the consultation, Cllr Phil Harris, Halton Borough Council’s portfolio holder for Housing Strategy said: “This is the first housing strategy in over a decade and has been set for a five period to encourage pace of delivery and responses to housing issues identified locally.’’
In early 2025, the Council completed a household survey which was sent to around one in four households in the borough. Discussions have also taken place with many organisations with an interest in housing, including providers of affordable housing. This new public consultation is another chance for everyone to have a say and the Council is keen to hear people’s views on the proposed new five-year strategy.
Talking about some of the priorities in the Housing Strategy, Cllr Harris added:
“Too many local residents in recent years have found it difficult to secure the housing choice they want, and some have had to go out of town to get a home. That isn’t acceptable – we need more local housing for local people. This strategy aims to help address that need and many others, such as the increasing needs of a growing number of older people.’’
