An Halton Borough Council female employee received a text message about overdue car tax which pretended to be from the DVLA, prompting a scam warning from Trading Standards.

The DVLA said scammers are sending emails and texts and making phone calls claiming to be from them.

Links to a website mocked up to look like a DVLA online service are sometimes included in the message.

Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board Member for Trading Standards, Cllr Dave Cargill, said: “The DVLA does not send emails or text messages with links to websites asking you to confirm your personal details or payment information.

“If you receive such an email or a text delete it without opening and without clicking on any links.

“You can find the online driving licence and vehicle tax services in the driving licence and vehicle tax sections of GOV.UK.”
