Lancashire Wildlife Trust is inviting you to join them for its self-led helleborine hunt.
Helleborines are wildflowers from the orchard family that thrive in damp woodlands, grasslands and dunes. They are a crucial plant in helping protect and restore wet woodlands in the UK.
With your help Lancashire Wildlife Trust will be able to map their locations across the Mersey Gateway which will support its Wet Willow Wildlife programme.
You can spot a helleborine species in shaded, damp areas with the four species to keep an eye out for being:
- Broad-leaved helleborine
- Marsh helleborine
- Green-flowered helleborine
- Dune helleborine
If you think you spot a helleborine then make sure to capture it and then submit it to: Helleborine Hunt
Even if you’re not 100% certain then don’t hesitate to upload an entry as staff from Lancashire Wildlife Trust will be able to confirm it for you.
Cllr Paul Nolan, Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board member for Environment and Urban Renewal, said: “We are extremely lucky here in Halton, and the Liverpool City Region as a whole, to have some really beautiful outdoor spaces. Personally, I think schemes like this that look to protect those unique spaces are so important. “
He continued: “What makes this even better is that it allows the general public to get involved! Being outdoors and helping benefit the environment, it doesn’t get much better than that does it? I can’t wait to see the final result once all the entries have been submitted.”
