The official opening of the recently completed Mary Twigg Woodland Walk took place on Friday 11th July. The Walk was created in memory of Mary Twigg, the wife of Derek Twigg, Member of Parliament for Widnes and Halewood, to celebrate Mary’s life and her contribution to the local community in Widnes.

The Woodland Walk provides a contemplative area, with a short walk and seating, offering a quiet space for reflection.  The Walk has been planted as a native woodland, which will develop into a woodland glade, with many mixed species ranges from Oaks, Birch, Hawthorn, Holly, Hornbeam, native Cherry and Apple trees.

The opening event was attended by Derek Twigg MP, members of his and Mary’s family, the Leader of Halton Council Mike Wharton, Cllr Andrea Wall, the Birchfield Ward Councillors – Cllr Bill Woolfall, Cllr Angela Ball and Cllr Mike Fry, Council Officers and Brian Tobin from Halton Farnworth Hornets.

Derek Twigg MP said, “I hope that people enjoy the space, I know that Mary would have loved it. I look forward to seeing the planting mature and develop over the years. Special thanks to Cllr Bill Woolfall and Cllr Andrea Wall for working together on this project to deliver the Mary Twigg Woodland Walk, the Council staff that were involved in it and to Brian Tobin and the rest of the team at Halton Farnworth Hornets who played an integral part in it.”

The Mary Twigg Woodland Walk is next to Halton Farnworth Hornet’s Wilmere Lane playing fields and can be accessed from Northumberland Road.
