Halton Borough Council’s Landscape team has recently completed significant improvements at Halton Cemetery in Runcorn, replacing uneven paving paths with sustainable permeable surfaces designed to enhance visitor safety, accessibility, and environmental resilience.

The new pathways provide smooth, level surfaces that make it easier for visitors to navigate the cemetery safely. Beyond accessibility, these surfaces allow rainwater to infiltrate naturally into the ground, reducing surface water flooding and supporting local ecosystems.

To further strengthen climate resilience, the project incorporated innovative materials such as gravel-filled cellular pavers and resin-bound aggregate. These solutions help mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall by reducing pressure on local drainage systems.

The chosen materials are not only sustainable and recyclable but were carefully selected to complement the cemetery’s natural and historic character, ensuring that environmental responsibility aligns with heritage preservation. Bulb planting was also carried out to further enhance the sites biodiversity and sense of place.

The project is one of the first packages of works as part of the Cemetery Infrastructure Improvement Works as approved by the Council’s Executive Board earlier this year and cost 30k.
