Keen reader Gill Allen who has worked for Halton Borough Council for 20 years, currently in Kingsway Learning Centre, has recently graduated with a B.A. Degree in English Literature.
The focused receptionist, studied with the Open University while working full time and juggling family duties.
Having been a member of both the Reading and Classic reading Groups at Widnes Library since 2002, she decided to try to fulfil one of her ambitions to study with the OU.
Gill only stopped attending the reading groups to concentrate on her studying, but was grateful to the Classic Reading Group as many of the books she had read came up on the modules.
This was a great help as to Gill to have previously read the books. “I wouldn’t say that my being a member of the reading groups was the major factor in my deciding to study, but it certainly helped.
“I would encourage anyone of whatever age to take up a course. I found it really satisfying.”
Gill returned to the Reading Group last week and is happy that many of the same people are still attending.
She said: “The group welcomed me back with open arms, and it didn’t feel like I have been away for almost six years.
“We all share a love for books and I would encourage anyone who is an avid reader to come along to one of the many reading groups held in Halton”.
“The library was a great resource for me during my studies. They ordered in many of the books I needed. for my studies. It also helped that my work bases me in the same building”.
