Remembering Srebrenica
The 11th July marks the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide – one of the worst atrocities in Europe since the end of World War Two, in which over 8,000 Muslim men and boys were murdered in and around the town of Srebrenica, during the Bosnian War. They were murdered simply because of their religious identity.
Halton Borough Council believes we must ensure that we and future generations never forget about the genocide and through this statement show our commitment to stand up against all forms of hatred and prejudice that targets groups based on their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or any type of difference.
It is now more important than ever for us to come together, to celebrate diversity and to stand together against hatred and discrimination. We hope you will join us in mourning the loss of those who died at Srebrenica and reflect on how we as individuals, groups and communities can come together to build a more peaceful and prosperous future without hatred.
Every year, Remembering Srebrenica selects a theme that reflects an aspect of the genocide that must be commemorated, but also speaks to communities here in the UK.
