Halton Borough Council is proud to share the exciting developments at Ridding Lane as part of a targeted investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). Ridding Lane was identified as a priority for regeneration—and now, after months of dedicated work, the transformation is complete.

Backed by strong support from the local community centre and insights from a Youth Proof report, four key interventions were identified to breathe new life into the area:

  1. Resolving Persistent Flooding Issues – Major drainage improvements have tackled long-standing waterlogging problems, making the area safer and more accessible year-round.
  2. Clearing Overgrown Vegetation – Dense, uninviting greenery has been cut back to open up the space, improving visibility and creating a more welcoming environment.
  3. Enhancing Access Routes – Pathways and entry points have been upgraded to ensure smoother, safer movement for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
  4. Bringing Art to the Underpasses – Two underpasses have been transformed into vibrant community landmarks with the installation of striking murals, celebrating local identity and creativity.

These efforts resulted in 1,014 square metres of land regenerated.

Community engagement was central to the project’s success. Local artist, One Red Shoe, held a consultation session at the community centre, gathering ideas and inspiration directly from residents. The result? Two full-scale subway murals that reflect the community’s voice and vision, now proudly displayed in the underpasses. These hand painted murals showcase the wealth of nature in the borough from the River Mersey celebrating the return of otters and seals to the waters; to a land of wonder, taking in nature themed elements, with the Cheshire Cat, excentric Caterpillar and iconic White Rabbit from Daresbury born Lewis Carroll’s works Alice in Wonderland. These murals capture the community and nature of Runcorn and surrounding area, leaving locals and visitors inspired as they explore.

All works were successfully completed during the winter of 2024/25, marking a new chapter for Ridding Lane. The improvements not only address long-standing concerns but also create a more inclusive, accessible, and inspiring space for residents of all ages.

“This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when local voices are heard and supported,” said a spokesperson for the initiative. “Ridding Lane is now a safer, brighter, and more connected part of our community.”

The transformation stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and targeted investment—and a promising sign of what’s possible for other areas across the borough.
