A new scheme to support care leavers in Halton has launched this week and people with the skills or experience to be a role model to young people age 16 -25 are encouraged to come forward and apply.
The young people who would benefit from this support have often overcome personal difficulties and lived successfully in a fostering family. A Supported Lodgings placement is the next step in preparing them for independence.
The role of a Registered Provider focuses on practical and emotional support. Providers will need to have a spare room and be able to offer a home-like environment, providing support with things like cooking, budgeting and developing confidence in the Young Person.
Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board Member for Children, Young People and Families, Cllr Tom McInerney, said: “So many of our teenagers and young people need a mentor as they move on from their fostering family and this scheme allows them to begin their journey to independence with lots of exemplary support around them.
“This is a rewarding role for people with caring qualities and an opportunity to help young people find their way, particularly during these difficult times”.
There is a swift assessment process and registered Providers will receive financial rewards, as well as full training and ongoing support from the local authority.
