The Council has been notified of a number of dead waterfowl at Spike Island. The incident has been reported to DEFRA who will undertake tests to determine whether the deaths are the result of Avian Flu.

As a precaution the Council is advising the public to avoid any contact with the birds on Spike Island, in particular the public should not hand feed the birds and should not touch or pick up sick or dead birds.

Spike Island remains open to the public. Avian Flu is predominantly a disease of birds and so the risk to the public is very low. The Council will provide an update once the test results are known.
