Work is now underway at Ashley High School, Widnes on a new SEND extension that will deliver four modern, purpose-built classrooms designed to support students.

Halton Borough Council, together with Whitfield & Brown, today (20 November) held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the occasion.

As well as the new SEND extension, the work will also remodel car parking facilities and improve external landscaping to enhance accessibility and convenience for students, staff and visitors.

Importantly, the extension will increase the capacity of a ‘core community facility’ as a special educational needs school, further strengthening Ashley High School’s pivotal role in the local area.

Cllr Tom McInerney, Executive Board Member for Children and Young People for Halton Borough Council, said: “I am delighted to see this work begin on Ashley High School. The addition of four modern, purpose-built classrooms will expand provision, meaning more children and young people can be educated in local specialist provision.

“Expanding the borough offer is part of our commitment to inclusive practice and supporting children and young people with SEND to achieve their aspirations and fulfil their potential.

“It is going to make such an important difference to the lives of so many children. I can’t wait to see the results once it is completed.”

Last year, Halton Borough Council approved plans to increase Ashley High School’s pupil capacity from 112 to 152, following a grant from the Department for Education (DfE) of £2.1m to expand Halton’s existing provision for pupils and students with high needs.

This project builds on the success of the previously completed sixth form block delivered in 2015 which featured a cybercafé, vocational training stations and a student-run office all designed to empower learners and foster independence.

Gareth Hadfield, Deputy MD, Whitfield & Brown, commented: “We are honoured to return to Ashley High School a decade after delivering the sixth form block, and proud to once again play a part in enhancing the learning environment for its students.

“Being located just two miles from the site, this project holds special significance for us as a local contractor. The new extension reflects our continued commitment to supporting inclusive education and delivering high-quality spaces that empower young people. It’s a privilege to contribute to a facility that plays such a vital role in our community.”

Mayor of Halton, Cllr Martha Lloyd Jones, added: “One of Ashley High School’s core values is to Aim High, and I can’t think of a more fitting occasion to reflect that aspiration. Today marks not just the start of a building project, but the continuation of a commitment to giving every young person the opportunity to thrive.

“The expansion of Ashley High School will make a real and lasting difference to the lives of so many children across our borough. It will create the space, the resources, and the environment they deserve. I very much look forward to returning once the work is complete and seeing the positive impact it will undoubtedly bring.”
