Halton Borough Council Road Safety Team is running a scheme which aims to help senior road users driving safely for longer.

The FREE two hour course is run by approved driving instructors to enhance drivers’ practical skills, gives drivers aged 65 and over the chance to brush up on their observation skills, learn how to cope with the mistakes of other road users and address any concerns they have.

The session is carried out in the drivers’ own cars. There are 100 places available.

Its not a driving test, so there’s no pass or fail, but the instructor will be able to give some insight into the driving style and how drivers negotiate roads, traffic and hazardous situations.

Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board Member for Transportation,  Cllr Stan Hill, said: “We hope the launch of this free driving course will play an integral part in ensuring the safety of our senior road users, by helping them to stay safe in what is becoming a challenging driving environment”.

Halton Borough Council’s Road Safety Co-ordinator, Michelle Simpson said, The Council understands the importance of driving to people as they get older and the independence it gives them. “We want senior road users to continue driving and feel safe and confident as they do so.”

Malcom Tough, of Halton Table Tennis Club, who is 80 this year, and completed the course said he really enjoyed it and found it interesting and useful and helped him to be a safer driver.
