The playful and poignant play ‘Marilyn’ is coming to the Brindley Theatre, Runcorn on Friday 1 March.
The play is the story behind the iconic woman Marilyn Monroe, that everyone thinks they know. Did we really know who she was? Did she?
This is Marilyn’s story, told by her – alone in her dressing room. Not the girl in that white dress with the pouting red lips and the curvaceous figure but Marilyn stripped back and bare – just an ordinary girl telling her story.
Direct from its West End run, Breakthrough Theatre presents this brand new, one-woman show that follows the dark and thrill-filled life of the iconic Marilyn.
London Theatre Reviews said of the production “A play that will be loved by Marilyn fans and enjoyed by those who don’t know her quite as well yet!”
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comic “blonde bombshell” characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and was emblematic of the era’s attitudes towards sexuality.
Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962 (equivalent to $2 billion in 2018). More than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon.
Monroe’s troubled private life received much attention. She struggled with substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. Her second and third marriages, to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller, respectively, were highly publicised and both ended in divorce.
On August 5, 1962, she died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles. Although Monroe’s death was ruled a probable suicide, several conspiracy theories have been proposed in the decades following her death.
