Halton’s blue bin service is expanding, giving you the chance to recycle a wider range of everyday items. The aim is simple: help you recycle more easily, cut down on waste, and do even more to protect our environment.

These improvements support the Government’s new Simpler Recycling rules under the Environment Act 2021. The goal is to make recycling collections consistent across England, so no matter where you live, you can recycle the same core items. This should make recycling less confusing and help boost national recycling rates as the country works towards a 65% municipal recycling target by 2035 and Net Zero goals.

So what’s new for your blue bin?

  • Biscuit tins
  • Aerosol sprays
  • Foil
  • Plastic food pots, tubs and trays
  • Tetra Paks

Just like now, everything you put in your blue bin will be taken to specialist facilities where the materials are sorted, cleaned and transformed into new products, like cardboard packaging, aluminium cans, glass bottles and even construction materials.

Some things still can’t go in your bin
Unfortunately, items like crisp packets, plastic bags and drinking glasses still can’t be recycled from home.

Cllr Paul Nolan, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Urban Renewal, said:
We’re excited about expanding our recycling service to make it even easier for residents to recycle more from home. These changes mean people can recycle more of the items they use every day, helping us reduce general waste, increase recycling rates and lower the costs of dealing with household waste.”
